Poseidon Gets into a Tense Competition (and Loses) - Ο Ποσειδώνας μπαίνει σε έντονο ανταγωνισμό (και χάνει)

You know, I always used to think that being Poseidon would be awesome. Having control over the sea is pretty cool, but now I’m not so sure I’d want to be this guy. Keep reading to find out why the other gods will be laughing at him for a long time. Sorry … let’s not get salty here.

There was once a king called Cecrops. King Cecrops was half-human and half-snake. He needed a patron deity for his city, which meant having a god or goddess who would look after the city. He asked the Olympians if any of them wanted the job. Two Olympians were interested – Poseidon and Athena. They both wanted to become the patron of the city so badly that they began to fight over it. A war had begun between the two gods.

Poseidon drowned entire civilisations in his rage, but before things could escalate further, Athena, being the Goddess of Wisdom, sought out Poseidon and told him to stop the war. Poseidon didn’t agree. He wanted to be patron of the city sooooo badly.

“NO! NEVER! This is my city and there’s NOTHING you can do about it, Athena!” he roared.

Athena shook her head. “Well, I think instead of having a war and risking our lives for a small city–”

“THIS CITY IS HUGE!” boomed Poseidon, interrupting her. “It’s the biggest city I have ever seen!”

“Perhaps we should have a competition then,” said Athena.

“A competition?” asked Poseidon.

“Yes, we shall each produce a gift for the citizens of the city, and whoever’s gift they like more, gets to be the patron of the city,” replied Athena.

“Hmm … deal!” smirked Poseidon.

And so, it was settled. The next day the two gods met. King Cecrops ushered the citizens to the shore where the two gods were waiting.

Poseidon decided to go first. “Okay, you guys will love my gift!” he grinned smugly. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident and a well appeared out of the ground. Poseidon carried on grinning.

“Is that all?” asked a child.

“What do you mean is that all? AREN’T YOU GRATEFUL?!”

The child gulped. “I’m s-s-s-sorry mister,” the child stammered.

“DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND? THIS WELL GRANTS YOU UNLIMITED WATER!” raged Poseidon.

“Ooooooohhhhhh,” said the crowd.

“Hey, that’s awesome! We’ll never die of thirst,” said a woman.

Poseidon brightened up. “Your turn, Athena,” he said, pulling a face at her.

“Okay, rage monster.” Athena winked.

Poseidon balled his fists, but before he could do anything, Athena hit the ground with her staff. A little leaf sprouted from the ground.

“Wow. Your gift is a leaf ?” laughed Poseidon.

“No. It’s this,” she said.

A tree flew out of the ground at an alarming speed. It smacked Poseidon right in the face and sent him flying into the air. The crowd giggled.

Where the small leaf had once been, a ten-metre- high tree now stood. Lots of small green fruit hung from its branches.

“Wooooooaaaah!” echoed the crowd.

Poseidon rolled his eyes. “Wow! A fruit tree! Great job, Athena,” he said, clapping his hands in fake applause.
